NHL Hockey Betting NHL Hockey betting is quite popular in America and Canada today. There is a lot of actions bettor can do. Get everything you need for NHL hockey betting here. To take advantage of the NHL odds that sportsbook puts out daily, you will need to understand how the odds is generated and how bookmakers set their number. Generally, odds maker will decide a margin of points that the favorite team should win over another team, the underdog. The most common ways to express NHL odds are point spread and the money line. Point Spread odds - also called the line, or the spread. The Odds on a NHL game are used to indicate the odds makers' opinions as to the probable outcome of the match. The point spread is used in hockey as a margin to handicap the favorite team. The favorite is always indicated by a minus sign (e.g. -1.5) and the underdog by a plus sign (e.g.+1.5, or simply 1.5). If you bet on the favorite, you win your bet if the favorite wins the match with their margin of victory greater than the point spread. In this case, if you bet on the favorite, they must win the game by more than 1.5 points, which is 2 points at least. If you bet on the underdog, you win if the underdog wins, ties, or if the favored team wins but fails to exceed the point spread. As to those betting on underdog, you win your bet if underdog win the game outright, tie, or lose the game by just one point. For betting on point spread, it is quite normal that you see the money line as (-110). This is saying that you wager $110 to win $100. If you win, you win $100 plus the return your original bet $110. If you lose, you lose your bet $110. Sportsbooks make the commission from the difference. See, they collect $110 from the losers, while pay $100 to the winners, for an $10 profit. Above is just an example. You do not need to bet an amount equal to the money line. You can bet more or less and no matter what currency you are using, the payoff will be the proportional amount, in the ratio of 100/110. Money Line odds Money line results are decided by an event's straight-up winner, since there is no point spread. Odds makers set the money line in the way that more money must be risked on the favorite (the probable winner) and less money on the underdog. Regardless of the score, money line betting is simply wagering on the team based on a given price that they will win the match outright. The price given for the favorite is always indicated by a minus sign (e.g.-150). The amount (-150) is indicating that you would risk $150 to win every $100, risking $1.5 to win $1.00. The underdog could be a plus sign (e.g.+140) or 2.4. What it means is that you can profit $140 for every $100 bet if the underdog wins the match outright. You would win $1.4 on every dollar you have risked. You do not need to bet an amount equal to the money line. You can bet more or less and no matter what currency you are using, the payoff will be the proportional amount. Let's see another example on a money line Detroit Red Wings (-160) @ Atlanta Thrashers (+140). As you can see from this line, the odds makers see Red Wings as the favorite, bettors would have to wager $160 to win $100, while a bet on the Thrashers would only require a $100 to win $140. The over/under is the number of points odds makers expect will be the total score for the contest (both teams combined, overtime included). You bet on whether the total points scored will be more or less than this number. Live NHL odds available ( The daily line is provided for informational purposes only. This is not a betting site. )
